Compeer Illawarra Program

Compeer is a Special Work of the St Vincent de Paul Society and aims to improve the quality of life and self esteem of adults with a diagnosed mental illness through one to one friendship with a caring volunteer. The program promotes Social Inclusion and helps decrease the stigma some times associated with having a mental illness.

Getting Involved

Volunteers meet with a Compeer friend (person with diagnosed mental illness) approximately 4 hours per month with a 12 month commitment from volunteer and friend. Compeer offers a safe and flexible volunteer opportunity with all training and follow up support provided. The program is open to those over the age of 18 and all meetings are conducted in an public place decided between friend and volunteer.
Activities may include meeting up for a coffee or going for a walk. The program is designed to improve social inclusion and provide opportunities the friend may not have had before.
