National Volunteer Week Release 2014

By Do Something
12 May 2014

This National Volunteer Week (May 12-18), the charity Do Something is calling on Australians to volunteer more. Do Something’s founder Jon Dee said there is currently a shortage of volunteers in many communities around Australia.

“Although research shows that Australians like volunteering, we’re finding that many local charities are running short on volunteers,” said Mr Dee. “This is affecting the ability of many charities to deliver services within their local community.”

The volunteer shortage has come to light via Do Something’s volunteer portal at DoSomethingNearYou.com.au. The site lists volunteering opportunities in all 16,000 suburbs around Australia.

“Many charities that we speak to say they need more volunteers,” said Mr Dee. “It would be great if more people could step up to the plate to give these charities a hand.”

“Volunteering is a very rewarding thing to do and we’re hoping that people who haven’t yet volunteered will start to do so.”

To start volunteering, all people have to do is type in their local postcode at DoSomethingNearYou.com.au. This will give them a list of community activities and events that they can support in their local area.
